california on our independent line. caller: i have two daughters who are attending public schools and they were attending private school. my contribution is approximately $30 per day. at the private school, it was private instruction. more days per school year than the public school and so forth. now i am moving them into the public school system. i get a note from the school system saying if your children are absent for a given day, the school does not receive money for the days they are not there. they were hoping we could cover their cost of $40 per student day. my first question is, how is it that at a public level where they have a fraction of the number of days of instruction per year and hours per day are shorter, they are asking for $40 per student day and they are getting a better quality of education at $30 a day per student. in the state of california, we are going broke. how can we justify more money for pensions? the second question i have for you is that you have mentioned the bush tax cuts for the rich and how this election was about letting the tax cuts for the ric

've seen this before. in 2000, karl rove said, george w. bush was going to win california. they spent millions and millions of dollars on advertising there. they sent bush out there, precious time, near the end of the campaign. i said, tad devine, carter, those of us involved in that campaign, so we're not spending one dime in california, and gore won the state by 1.3 million votes. the wish can't become father to the reality, which is what's going on here. >> like a team trying to talk their way to a championship instead of playing the game, so to speak. shouldn't romney have florida wrapped up? >> he should. he has a lot of -- there, he has structural advantages because he's got the governor and virtually all the statewide officials. but i think the medicare, and the republicans like to say, oh, we've countered it with this lie about a $716 billion cut under obama care, when in fact there is no such cut. there's no cut in benefits. i think that seniors have figured out two things. one, romney wants to replace medicare with voucher care. they don't like it. but isn't it the latino an

states like the university of california with what has been the premier example of planning the master plan for the last 50 years. we have the state university of new york which kind of pulls together a lot of different philosophy, then you have michigan, and michigan since the frontier days has selected as its design principal anarchy and what that means is that each of the 15 campuses, public campuses in the state have constitutional autonomy. we have no umbrella organization that philosophy has allowed the state over the last century and a half to develop one of the finest higher education systems and the country with one of the lowest levels of support. actually the state of michigan didn't provide any support at all for higher education until the late 19th century. it spent all of the money that it retained from selling land and kept it and didn't give it to the university. the university of michigan has learned from that and consciously over the last several decades has redesigned itself to be loosely coupled adopted system will and what i mean by that is through a variety of ste

grow the middle class. host: jim, california. republican line. caller: $250,000 is not rich. the people on television betting for money, you should tax them. how much do you pay? the president and democrats suck up to these celebrities. they have to pay $40,000 to hang around the democrats. host: he says $250,000 and he criticized fund-raisers. guest: i think there is too much money in politics, and by the way, 80% of the $250,000 and above the income is income over $1 million. that is where the bulk of the money is over $250,000, so when you end the tax break, you are very much affecting mostly people that have over $1 million in income annually. so, again, we need to have a balanced approach, and everybody needs to do their fair share, including me the president said during the campaign -- and the president said during the campaign that the tax breaks for him and governor romney should end. i think the tax breaks for anyone in those categories need to end as part of a balanced approach and we need to extend the tax cuts for middle-class families in this country. that is what this argu
